Pick a Linux, Any Linux!
Ubuntu Features:
- Free and Open Source
- New long term support (LTS) version every 2 years; good for 5 years
- Easy to use, robust, scripted O/S upgrade path - in-place upgrades
- Stays fairly current on included components
Red Hat Enterprise License (RHEL) Features:
- Commercial, but Georgia Tech has campus license
- LTS versions tend to be good for up to ten years, but harder to upgrade
- Components do not stay as up-to-date, but old component versions get security patches
Other variants can be used; your mileage may vary
