Rehearsal is Essential

  • Do "dress rehearsals": stand with your notebook in front of you and pretend you have an audience

    • Say everything you plan to say, and speak everything aloud: you'll catch stuff you'd never notice otherwise

    • If you're repeatedly stumbling over something, think about rephrasing it

    • Make sure you're not running over your time (strive for 15 minutes less than your time slot, to leave time for Q&A and overrun)

  • Don't worry about memorizing verbatim – just try to memorize the core concepts in order, to minimize dependence on your notes

  • Rehearse for someone in your profession ask for feedback

  • Don't over-rehearse: it doesn't help to be sick of your own presentation by the time you get to the conference!
